Mass transfer in blood oxygenators

During surgery, oxygenators are used in heart lung machines to provide gas exchange of oxygen (O2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) to and from the blood, respectively. Nowadays, oxygenators persist of thousands hollow fiber membranes which separate the blood from the gas phase. In the depicted example the blood passes the fiber membranes whereas the gas flows through them. Due to O2 and CO2 partial pressure differences the mass transfer over the fiber membrane can take place.
