Cardiac Assist & Replacement

The clinical applications of blood pumps are manifold. They range from organ support in extracorporeal circuits to human heart replacement by a Total Artificial Heart. Accordingly, there are manifold types and designs of blood pumps available. They range from continuous flow rotary pumps to displacement pumps providing pulsatile blood flow.

The preclinical development of innovative blood pump concepts is a traditional research focus of the Cardiovascular Engineering group as well. Several of its concepts could already be successfully transferred into clinical applications (-> Spin Off Products).

Current developments of the group focus on miniaturized cardiac assist devices for minimal invasive implantation as well as heart replacement by a fully implantable Total Artificial Heart.
