During the 16th conference of the International Society for Rotary Blood Pumps at October 2nd-4th 2008 in Houston, Texas, a simulation study about cannulation of cardio-pulmonary-bypass patients, which was undertaken at the Department for Applied Medival Engineering, Helmholtz Institute, RWTH Aachen University in cooperation with Frankfurt University Hospital, received the “Helmut Reul Young Investigators Encouragement Award”.The simulation revealed, consistent with clinical data, that the outflow cannula positioning has a strong impact on cerebral perfusion. For this purpose, different approaches of cannulation were compared and a method was invented to perform high resolution studies of the flow field in the cardiovascular system. Besides the project and clinical relevance, the work and presentation of Mr. Dipl. Phys. Tim A S Kaufmann, research associate at the Department of Applied Medical Engineering, was prized.
