Respiratory Tissue Engineering

Tissue Engineering research focusses only rarely on the lungs, which is an essential organ. Every year, several million people suffer and die from lung diseases as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and lung carcinoma, a number that is increasing. Since therapeutic options are insufficient, it is of high importance to continue research on effective therapies and long-term replacements. Tissue Engineering applies the principle of taking the patients’ own cells to prevent an immune response in advance.

In the field of Respiratory Tissue Engineering, our group focusses on the following topics:

  • Biohybrid lung support systems (EndOxy),
  • viable airway stents (PulmoStent),
  • in vitro-culture of respiratory epithelial cells
  • biomechanical influences on the respiratory epithelium (CiliarMechanik).
